NEWS Cyanophora paradoxa is a glaucophyte whose genome is being sequenced with generous funding of nearly $2 million from the Microbial Genome Program of the National Science Foundation. The genome is 140 million nucleotides in size and the project will determine a 6.5X draft sequence. Glaucophytes are the first group to branch off after the evolutionary acquisition of plastids, leaving the lineage that would later split to become the red and green algae. This sequence will be compared with those of many other organisms to infer the patterns of transfer of genes among plastids, mitochondria, and nuclei, and among the nuclear genomes of the organisms that secondarily acquired plastids by engulfing other organisms. This project is led by Debashish Bhattacharya of the University of Iowa with a $1.6 million contract to co-P.I. Jeffrey Boore for the sequencing, informatics, and presentation to the community. See the award information here. As of December, 2007, over 200,000 lanes of DNA sequencing have been performed.
