Through his appointment as Senior Associate at SymBio Corporation, Jeffrey Boore is co-P.I. on a project to sequence the complete 140 MB genome of the glaucophyte Cyanophora paradoxa. This project is led by Debashish Bhattacharya of the University of Iowa and funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation / U.S. Department of Agriculture Microbial Genomes Program. A single library was constructed in plasmid vector from randomly sheared fragments of the genome averaging 3 KB. The agreed-upon 650,000 lanes of sequence has now been determined from this library, generating about 2.25x coverage to date. Appropriate quality control measures put the genome on track for completion in mid-2009. See the award information here. See an earlier news story on this project here.
